What Keith Miller and Gerry Brown can teach us about politics and climate change

Australian fast bowler Ray Lindwall sent down a fearsome bouncer and it struck the batsman with a terrible blow to the head. Fielders and umpires rushed to his aid as he collapsed on the pitch, grazing the stumps as he fell.

Keith Miller, who was fielding in the slips in this match against a provincial team at the start of Australia’s 1949-50 South African tour, quickly picked up a lone bail that had fallen on the ground and placed it on the stumps while umpires were distracted by helping the dazed South African batsman.

No one, at least no one from cricket officialdom, noticed at the time. After all, it was long before live television coverage of the game, not to mention instant TV replays.

One spectator at the ground for that 1949 match was seated on one of the back pews of Melbourne’s St Paul’s Anglican Cathedral 55 years later at Keith Miller’s funeral. The incident may not have been officially recorded, but this was his memory of the game. He explained to another member of the congregation the reason why he was prompted to pay his final respects to Australia’s greatest ever cricketing all-rounder.

Keith Miller was indeed a remarkable figure. Tall, with matinee idol looks, he was a natural sportsman – “magnetic, iconic and the dashing hero of the cricket world”, according to veteran cricket commentator Arunabha Sengupta. He also played 100 games for his beloved St Kilda football team, in the VFL (now AFL) competitio

Miller knew about life and had his fair share of ups and downs. As the old bush saying goes, "he was a bugger to ramble". He was from the old school and had little time for psychobabble, or over-used words like "stress". The World War II Mosquito bomber pilot once told British TV interviewer Michael Parkinson: "Pressure is a Messerschmitt up your arse, playing cricket is not."

It was almost 70 years after Miller's bail action that members of the Australian cricket team were once again on tour in South Africa. This time the team fell into disgrace after opener Cameron Bancroft was caught engaging in illegal ball tampering. The result was that captain Steve Smith, vice-captain David Warner and Bancroft were handed hefty bans, although Smith and Warner are expected to join the Australian cricket team's tour of the UK later this year.

Separated by almost seven decades, those two vastly different events in Australian cricket came out of different eras. The contrasting stories invite reflection on the changing nature of our times and the fact that simple acts of kindness and grace are rare in contemporary sport or politics.

Many will argue the cause. Some say the intensely commercial nature of high-level modern sport, particularly the coarsening of the great game by "hit and giggle" T-20 cricket, and the colossal financial bait of the T-20 Indian Premier League, are significant factors.

Coarsening

A parallel coarsening in politics has been attributed, among other things, to the hi-tech gizmos of electoral politics, like robo-calls, digital push-polling, Facebook "bot" campaigning and online shaming. All are predicated on the results of exhaustive focus-group monitoring.

Other factors include more pathways for political party hacks to secure parliamentary seats as the popular membership base of major parties narrows, 24/7 media coverage, or the obsessive self-referencing of the iPhone-Facebook generation.

Whatever the case, the politics of the past featured more grace. In her fine biography of Alfred Deakin (The Enigmatic Mr Deakin), Judith Brett records how the one-time Melbourne journalist and lawyer and later prime minister was fulsome in his praise of his political rival, Edmund Barton, to the point of encouraging Barton as Australia's first PM.

When the first federal Parliament met in Melbourne, Deakin was also generous with help and advice for the new federal MPs from all over the new nation and the three post-Federation political parties – Protectionists, Free Traders and Labor. Shunning the perks of office when he later became PM, the man of great gifts and modest needs cycled to work.

How technology is strengthening the future of EVs in India

The world is progressing at a fast pace every day. With the emergence of new technological interventions with each passing month, many industries across multiple verticals are witnessing a remarkable growth. Transportation is one such industry leveraging these digital disruptions to a great extent into its mechanism with complete agility.

Future of Electric Vehicles in India

With approximately 900 million vehicles on road at present globally, transportation is one of the major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions due to the usage of petrol. While solutions to this problem have come in the form of ridesharing and public transportation, altering the larger picture would need drastic measures. Electric vehicles have the potential to substantially reduce GHG emissions as well as air pollution. Merely by plugging an EV to a charger for a few hours, enough energy can be stored to go through the day. Along with curbing pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and all such environmental concerns, electric vehicles also have the potential to help reduce our reliance on crude oil and its consumption.

Electric vehicles have already hit the Indian roads and according to the latest report by the International Energy Agency, electric vehicles will grow from 3 million at present to 125 million by 2030. Although the demand for EVs is expected to grow exponentially during the next two decades, driven by favourable government policies and increasing environmental awareness amongst users, it is the new technological interventions in the form of detachable batteries that are helping EVs achieve optimum growth and a massive uptake in India.

EVs were traditionally powered with lead-acid batteries that had few drawbacks. Their bulky exterior made the movement of vehicles a tedious task. Not only was it an extremely inefficient and time-consuming process to charge the batteries, but their life-cycle was also quite low.

Detachable lithium-ion batteries have come as a solution to all the problems refraining the EV industry from achieving its full potential. The new batteries embrace advanced technology, which is more progressive than the traditional charging infrastructure available for EVs. The major advantage of using a lithium-ion battery is the detachable feature that makes it easy to replace. As a result, they are being touted as the next big thing in the industry.

New-age EVs are also incorporating a number of passenger safety-oriented features to augment overall security for both drivers and the vehicle. Specifically, in a country like India where the safety of women is an issue of grave concern, EVs have been introduced with a host of smart features like geo-fencing and GPS technologies to locate vehicles quickly and immaculately. This makes the ride convenient, environment-friendly, cost-effective and highly secure for women. For those travelling on a fixed route, the geo-fencing feature reports any abnormal movement of the vehicle for near and dear ones. It also offers maps of available parking spaces nearby and gives persistent reminders to drivers for any kind of malfunction that the vehicle is going through, or might occur. By leveraging technology, electronic vehicles can also ring in smart alarms for over-speeding and offer reminders to users for making timely insurance payments or regular servicing visits.

Considering all the positive signs in the EV sector in India, the government is keenly working towards encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles in the Indian market for a holistic economic, environmental and social benefit. The dawn of IoT is further urging the government to set up a grid-based infrastructure that can monitor vehicular progress and ensure greater security. However, for the sector to reach a large enough scale and start replacing the 230 million conventional vehicles on Indian roads, a joint effort is required by the innovators, entrepreneurs, and regulators to evolve new business models and develop a robust infrastructure around electric vehicles for its successful adoption.

Exciting.

Very much riffing on modern Take That and Coldplay heroics, ‘Hello My Love’ is a decent tonic for cold and dark January mornings.

A pop stomp that’s sure to bother the charts, the track may not initially appear to be on the same level as ‘When You’re Looking Like That’ but it should keep fans happy for now.

The song has some decent pedigree, too, given that it was co-written by Ed Sheeran and produced by Steve Mac, who also worked on ‘Shape of You’, ‘Your Song’ and ‘Woman Like Me’.

Give it a whirl below, and don’t miss them on Friday night when they hit up The Graham Norton Show.

No More Bollywood Plans For Arjun Rampal’s Rumoured Girlfriend Gabriella Demetriades. Here’s Why

Gabriella Demetriades said: “I did just one film. Honestly, I didn’t love the experience in it”

I did just one film. Honestly, I didn’t love the experience in it. So, I didn’t want to do another film,” Gabriella told IANS.

“So, I made my way back into the fashion space because that is where I feel most comfortable,” added the model, who is hosting an AXN Original series Twinning.

Gabriella, who is said to be dating Bollywood actor Arjun Rampal, has her own fashion label. She loves the concept of her TV show Twinning, aired on AXN.

Gabriella along with Erika Packard give viewers different looks and fashion tips stemming from their unique sensibilities and individual style.C

“It is interesting to have two voices on one subject. We get two perspectives which are very relatable. It is an easy show to watch, follow and learn from,” she said.

Bollywood film on former PM Manmohan Singh stirs controversy before election

A film that casts opposition leader Rahul Gandhi and his family in an unflattering light ahead of a national election later this year has kicked up a controversy ahead of its release on Friday.

Afilm that casts opposition leader Rahul Gandhi and his family in an unflattering light ahead of a national election later this year has kicked up a controversy ahead of its release on Friday (Jan 11).

Commentators on social media and television news programmes have taken swipes at the makers of The Accidental Prime Minister for pursuing a political agenda, while a spokesman for the Gandhi’s Congress Party has derided it as “propaganda”.

The Accedental Prime Minister|Official Trailer

Based on a 2014 book of the same name, the Bollywood movie is billed as a chronicle of Manmohan Singh’s 10-year premiership, as narrated by his former media advisor Sanjaya Baru.

Singh, a distinguished economist often credited for the country’s liberalisation push in the 1990s, became prime minister in 2004, after Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Rahul’s mother, led her party to a surprise election victory, but then stunned the country by nominating Singh for the premiership.

Trailers for the movie include scenes showing the Gandhis telling the mild-mannered Singh what to do, providing political ammunition for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party as it girds for a harder-than-expected battle to win a second term at an election that must be called by May.

The BJP's official Twitter handle tweeted a link to the trailer, calling the film "a riveting tale of how a family held the country to ransom for 10 long years".

Rahul Gandhi's father, grandmother and great-grandfather were all prime ministers of India, and the BJP habitually targets the dynasty.

The trailer has garnered more than 63 million views on YouTube. In one scene, Singh's wife is shown asking her forlorn husband: "How much more will the party insult you? Why can’t you say something?"

Singh, now 86 years old, could not be reached immediately by Reuters for comment.

Anupam Kher, the actor who plays Singh, has been an ardent Modi supporter and his wife is a national lawmaker for the BJP. Akshaye Khanna, who plays Baru's character in the film, is the son of Vinod Khanna, a film actor who was also a BJP lawmaker.

Kher told Reuters that he didn't want to discuss political views "because whatever I say will not satisfy those who raise objections".

But the coming elections left suspicions over the timing of the film's release.

Fellow Bollywood actor Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub tweeted, "why don’t you just postpone the release till July, if it is just a pure piece of cinema and nothing more?”
